Acupuncture is one of the treatment modalities of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the oldest professional and continuously practiced medicine in the world. This gentle therapy uses fine sterile disposable needles and electrical stimulation. The needles are inserted at varying depths with the aim to reach either neurovascular or soft tissue structures.
A few physiological changes that take place are:
Release of Opioid Peptides
Stimulation of Hypothalamus and Pituitary Gland
Secretion of Neurotransmitters and Neurohormones
Changes in Blood Flow
Alterations in Immune Function
Acupuncture needles cause minimal or no discomfort when inserted. Certain normal “Chi” sensations could be experienced when an acupuncture needle is inserted (i.e.soreness, achyness, heaviness, numbness and a swollen feeling).
Acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities, promotes physical and emotional well-being, prevents illness and treats various medical conditions (i.e.ankle sprains, shoulder injuries, back pain, stress).
